Mayday: History of a Village Holocaust

Very interesting story on part of my heritage.
While I am only in my thirties I can remember my family driving thru Bath and my folks describing the terrible event that transpired years previously. How what would have been 3 of my dad's cousins were killed and 1 injured. This story somehow stirs sad and nostalgic feelings within me. This book really makes such an unbelievable event seem very real, and something in my life will be missing forever because of Andrew Kehoe

Worst bombing of a public building until Oklahoma City
Two days before Charles Lindbergh flew the Atlantic the bombing of a school took place in Bath, Michigan. On May 18, 1927, a deranged killer by the name of Andrew Kehoe attempted to kill as many children and adults by dynamite explosives planted in the Bath schoolhouse. His success was thwarted when only half of the dynamite exploded. The events leading up to the "Bath School Disaster" are well documented by the author Grant Parker. The story of mid-America in the 1920's is chronicled in a accurate and informative way by the author, as he presents a way of life that was disrupted for many families for a lifetime. I have a special interest in this book because both my mother and my uncle were in in the other half of the school that did not blow up on that Mayday. For more than seventy years the survivors of the disaster have met in the Spring of each year to continue their survival bonding with each other.

For Kids and Adults Struggling with Avoidance and Anxieties
All the therapists out there plunking down $18 dollars for a "therapeutic book for children" should hold out for a copy of this book instead. It more beautifully and seductively illustrates a young child's triumph against a fearful monster than any other book in the professional field.

The illustrations are magickal. The text accessible to young children and adults alike. Remember ordering books purporting to be the top of the line in bibliotherapy -- and then when you got them in the mail they were black and white drawings with strained paragraphs about "coping skills" for kids? This book is a "corrective emotional experience" for those seeking a book that teaches without the use of a sledgehammer.

We need more books like these -- folklore as therapy, illustrated by non-Ph.D-ed artists!

More Than Sex: Reinventing the Black Male Image
Published in Hardcover by Kensington Pub Corp (January, 1900)
Authors: George Edmond Smith and Gwendolyn Goldsby Grant
Average review score:

"a must-read capable of transforming the lives of black men"
Dr. Smith;

I read your book, "More Than Sex: Reinventing The Black Male Image", a couple of months ago, and I just had to commend you on producing a must-read capable of transforming the lives of black men-and I'm speaking from personal experience. I am a 40-year-old, soon-to-be divorced, devoted father of three. I've been separated from my wife for more than two years (our second separation) and celibate for all of that time, as I began to cope with the frustrating realization that I had been a consistent failure in my attempts to establish the kind of lasting, fulfilling, healthy, loving relationship with a woman that I've longed for since I was a little boy. I am the oldest of four children of divorced parents. I haven't seen my father since I was 12, and with the exception of my paternal grandparents, there are few, if any, examples of healthy marital relationships among the aunts and uncles on either side of my family. I knew what I was looking for in a marriage; I have only during the past two years come to realize that I hadn't a clue as to how to achieve it. That is, until I read "More Than Sex."

After reading your book, I've simultaneously:

1) gained a clear understanding of the choices I made, and their consequences, that led to a failed 14-year marriage, 2) recognized patterns of behavior that pretty much doomed the long-term health and survival of my past romantic relationships with women, 3) learned how to recognize and avoid unhealthy relationship behaviors in myself and in potential partners (and thus allowed one potentially destructive, post-marital relationship to end, and subsequently resisted the temptation--based almost entirely on physical attraction-- to revive a fruitless past relationship) 4) learned what to expect and to offer to achieve the long-term, committed, healthy, loving relationship I've longed for all of my life.

As a result, for the first time in my life, I am in a relationship where I feel I have more than a clue as to what I'm doing, the motivations driving my choices and my own expectations and sense of accountability. I constantly refer to passages in your book (highlighting the most instructional sections) to avoid backsliding into old, unhealthy behaviors and to remind myself of the new, healthy relationship behaviors you reveal and I've tried to adopt. The result is truly more than sex: a level of harmony, joyous friendship, mutual trust and respect, honest communication and deep emotional intimacy that I have never experienced in any relationship. Beyond that, the sexual attraction and energy we enjoy is nothing short of mind-blowing--and we haven't even had intercourse yet! (We are between the Infatuation and Barriers of Control stages of our relationship.)

I've been recommending your book to anyone who will listen. I tell them that we think that because we fall in love, it means we know how to love, which is like thinking that because we sometimes get caught in rainstorms, we know how to swim. Thanks to you, I've learned that love is a feeling, but loving is a choice. Thanks to you, I have a better understanding of who, how and why I choose to love.

Thank you, and thank God for inspiring you to write this book..............

Wow...what an eye opening book..The truth needed to be said!
I just finished Dr. Smith's book, and I have to tell you, it's really quite interesting! The author talks frankly about Black men and how they are driven by their sexuality. Anger, impotence, self-esteem, and their relationships with Black women are discussed. Perhaps the most wonderful part of the book would be the story about Dr. Smith himself. He is a Black man who came from an impoverished home, his father dying in prison and having an uneducated mother to becoming a physician. He shares true stories from patients that he's met throughout the years, and many of them I can identify with. It's about time someone talked about Black men with candor!

Thanks for writing such a wonderful book!

Superlative new neuro-op text.
This is a phenomenal text written by the rising stars of neuro-op. It will soon be the new gold standard.

Excellent
A much more user friendly and updated version of the smaller Walsh & Hoyt text. The pictures are excellent and the discussions are well supported by clinical experience and the literature.

A Never Ending Story: Poetry by Stephen B Grant
Interesting. I never thought that I would enjoy POETRY as much as I did from reading this book. It's definitely not like the old storybook poetry that I use to loath. It's refreshing and gives a clear understanding to what I myself may have been going through or feeling at that 'precise moment' and it's really really good. Someone recommended the book to me and I was not, I mean I was not going to purchase a book of 'poetry'...let's just say, if I did not...it would have been the biggest mistake I could've ever made. Excellent job Stephen B Grant, hopefully someone will recognize how extremely good your work is and others will enjoy what I already know.

Awesome Reading
If you never enjoyed poetry before, you'll definitely in for a surprise. Many of the poems in this book, you can actually picture and feel what the author was saying. There were some situations that I felt myself there...at each moment...on each line. Trust me, it was definitely...Awesome Reading.
